AHSA Families,
We wanted to update
everyone on the status of our leagues and announce that we will be doing an
“open gym” format for many sports this spring.
ACSL
Albuquerque Charter
School League (ACSL) is the league which we participate in for our high school
sports. ACSL will not be having sports for the remainder of this school
year. Most of the Charter Schools will not be returning to any kind of
classroom learning this spring. Also, many of the schools, similar to us,
are constrained by not having their own gym facilities.
APIAL
Albuquerque Parochial
Athletics League (APIAL) is the league in which we participate for our mid
school sports. APIAL is having a spring season for several sports but
AHSA is not able to participate due to a lack of facilities in which to
practice or host games. We explored different options to participate
here, but ultimately decided against it. There are some opportunities for
individual students to participate in golf in this league. If you would
like to explore these opportunities, please go to APIAL’s website.
With the above
constraints, the Board still wanted to provide some opportunity for AHSA
students to be able to get together and compete athletically. As such, we
are having an “open gym” period this spring similar to what we have done for
basketball and volleyball in past summers. All sports practices will be
outside at public facilities chosen by the Coach for each sport. The
opportunities (so far) to participate are as follows:

These
events will be under the AHSA insurance umbrella. As such we will be
charging a small registration fee for anyone participating
($10/student/sport). Registration for each of the sports shown above is
now open on the website. If additional opportunities are able to be added,
we will update the membership and add the additional registration
categories. We will also be sending out the days and times for each sport
in the very near future but wanted to get these open for registration so that
coaches know how many participants they will have.
If
there is a sport or age group that you would like to see that you would be
willing to coach, please reach out to the board.
As an
organization we will not be strictly enforcing NMAA guidelines for COVID practices.
We do, however, want to be respectful of any other users of any public
facilities and we do not want to be seen as belligerently not complying with
regulations. We will be striking a balance as laid out by each
Coach. Some basics:
- Show up with a
mask.
- Wear a mask
whenever in close proximity of any member of the general public.
- Whether masks
will be worn at other times during the practices will be up to the coach
for that event.
In
order to participate, each student and their parents must agree to the above.
You will need to respect the leadership of the coaches and be respectful of the
general public with whom we will be sharing facilities. Based on feedback
so far most of our coaches will not require masks to be worn during physical
activity but will be encouraging some distancing.
We
are excited to be able to provide some athletic activity, although limited, and
look forward to seeing everyone out on the trail/field/park!
