HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

  • Each sport usually meets three times per week (3 practices, or 2 practices and 1 game, or 2 games and 1 practice, etc.).
  • We are a competitive program; thus individual play time in games is not equal.
  • We meet at various gyms and parks throughout the city.
  • Specific practice/game schedules and locations are usually not available until after registration has closed.  Schedules will be emailed to you directly from the coaches once registration has been finalized and rosters have been sent to the coaches.  If when you receive the schedule you find that you are unable to participate in our program, please contact us at [email protected].
  • Schedules are subject to change throughout the season.  We are dependent upon the operating schedules of the facilities that we use.

Sport seasons listed are approximate.  Note that some sport seasons overlap.  Please take this into consideration when registering one student for multiple sports.  When one student has two sports that are listed for different seasons, but overlap somewhat, the sport for which the season started first is the one that should be given priority.

FALL SPORTS

HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED SOCCER:  (Late July through Mid-November)
This is a co-ed sport.  We usually only field one team, so spots fill up quickly - plan to register early!  We aim to build a team consisting of an equal number of boy and girl athletes.  We compete in the ACSL Varsity League.  Pre-season skills and scrimmage practices are sometimes held throughout the summer.  Full practices normally begin in early August and are usually held at Montgomery Park.

HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED CROSS COUNTRY:
  (Early August through Mid-October)

Cross Country competes in the ACSL League.  High school runs a 5K race (3.1 miles).  There are no tryouts for Cross Country, but all runners need to be able to complete their respective distances without stopping by September 2nd.  Runners unable to complete this task may be retained on the team, but that will be contingent upon having enough helpers to work with them.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS FLAG FOOTBALL:  (Early August through Late October)
We compete in the ACSL Varsity League.  If there are enough participants and coaches to form more than one team, coaches determine team placement.  Games are usually held at USS Bullhead Memorial Park. Practice locations are to be determined.  Cleats and mouthguards are required.

BASKETBALL  (Season depends on team placement.  Please read details below.)

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL:  Season depends on team placement.  JV Season is Early September through Early December.  Varsity Season is October through Early February.
Tryouts to determine on which team players will be placed will either be held in late August (if we field a JV team that year), or in September.  We'll likely field two teams.  One will be the Varsity team, playing in the ACSL Varsity league which may begin in October and run through early February.  The second team will either be the JV team, playing in the ACSL JV League during the JV season (Sept. - early Dec.), or the Purple (mid-level) team, which will play in the varsity league during the varsity season (Oct. - Feb.).

NOTES:
The players invited to the Varsity team should be aware they will be asked to have a greater player and parent commitment.  This may include traveling to tournaments including National Christian Homeschool Championships in March.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALLSeason depends on team placement.  JV Season is Late August through Early December.  Varsity Season is October through Early March.
Tryouts to determine on which team players will be placed are in late August.  Typically we field two or three high school boys teams, including one in the ACSL JV League consisting of 9th and 10th gradersJV League season begins in late August, and ends in early December.  The other team(s) will play in the ACSL Varsity league which may start in October and run through early March.  One will be the Varsity team and the other the Purple (mid-level) team.  The August tryouts will determine on which team players will be placed.

NOTES:
The players invited to the Varsity team should be aware they will be asked to have a greater player and parent commitment.  This may include traveling to tournaments including National Christian Homeschool Championships in March.

SPRING SPORTS

HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED TENNIS:  (Mid-January through Mid-April)
We compete with public and private schools through the USTA.
When signing up for High School Tennis, please be committed to the whole tennis season, which includes the tennis tournament held in April, usually on the same weekend as the annual CAPE convention (Saturday and Sunday).   If your family participates in this convention, please consider before signing up whether you can make the commitment to the tennis team your priority for both tournament days.  If you register for tennis, we will consider that you will be available for both Saturday and Sunday of the tournament weekend.

The season is too short to have a ladder system for seeding so coaches will decide this based on their discretion.  Practices are usually on Mondays and Fridays.  Matches are normally held on Wednesday afternoons beginning in early March and running through mid April.  Practices are usually held at one of the city tennis courts.  Zuni, Don Juan De Onate, Jerry Cline, and Los Altos tennis courts are ones that we have used in the past.

In general, 8th graders are only allowed to play high school tennis if they have been part of the middle school tennis program with AHSA.  Eighth graders wishing to participate in AHSA High School Tennis may register and will be placed on a waiting list and allowed on a team with coach approval if roster spots are available at the close of registration.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL:  (Early January through Early May)

Tryouts to determine which on which team players will be placed may be in mid to late January.  Depending on turnout, we will likely field two teams capped at 10 players each: one to compete in the ACSL JV division consisting of 9th and 10th graders, and another to compete in the Varsity division consisting of 11th and 12th graders along with those 9th and 10th graders who qualify based on tryouts. Upperclassmen will be placed on the Varsity team but will not necessarily be given a starting position.

All high school girls are eligible to try out for the varsity starting positions.  Volleyball is a highly skilled, position specific sport; thus "playing time" is determined based on a player's specific skill set and the needs of the team in each rotation.  Playing time is not measured in "minutes played", and will not be equal.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VOLLEYBALL:  (Mid-February through Early May)
Depending on turnout, we may field two teams capped at 10 players each; they would most likely both play in the ACSL Varsity league.  If there is more than one team, tryouts to determine on which team players will be placed are in late February.

All high school boys are eligible to try out for the varsity starting positions.  Volleyball is a highly skilled, position specific sport; thus "playing time" is determined based on a player's specific skill set and the needs of the team in each rotation.  Playing time is not measured in "minutes played" and will not be equal.

Eighth graders may be allowed to play on the boys high school team, if additional players are needed to fill out a team.

HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED TRACK & FIELD:  (Early March through Mid-May)
Practices are three times per week at a public school track field, usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.  There are normally about four or five meets that are held on Saturdays in April and May.  Events include 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m sprints as well as 1600m and 3200m distance events.  We offer 2 relay events.  Field events are shot put, discus, and long jump.  We compete in the ACSL League.
